oscillation in trace:
PROCEDURE: MACHINE OSCILLATIONS IN TRACE
Check for High Break Away Current
Check for Excessive Lost Motion (resolvers/encoders)
Check for Excessive Lost Motion (scales/inductosyns)
Check for Axis Crabbing
Check for Loose Head Bracket
Check for Damaged Rupture Disk
Check for Noisy Tach
Check for Stylus/Model Roughness

Check for high "break away" current. Connect meter to monitor motor current. Set power feed rate at 10 IPM. Move axis and monitor current as axis begins to move. Current should be less than 1.5 times nominal current to move axis. If current is greater than the 1.5 nominal see HIGH AXIS MOTOR CURRENT.

Check for excessive lost motion in axis. (Machine with resolvers or encoders on motor or ball screw). Note: If in pencil trace while reversing direction, the tracing head feels like it "clicks" and/or a "clunk" is heard, this may indicate lost motion.

CAT I: Set BACKLASH COMP touch field at zero on the SYSTEM SETUP/SYSTEM MACHINE X, Y or Z menus.

CAT II: Set BACKLASH COMP touch field at zero on the SYSTEM SETUP/X, Y OR Z AXIS PARAMETERS screens.

Record the values that were in the BACKLASH COMP touch field for reference purposes. Set jog move for .020 inch at 5 IPM. Move onto dial indicator. Zero indicator. Jog .020 inch further onto indicator. Jog back .020 inch. If indicator is not at zero, distance away from zero is lost motion in machine. CAT I: Enter amount of lost motion in the BACKLASH COMP touch field on the SYSTEM SETUP/SYSTEM MACHINE X, Y or Z menus for X, Y or Z backlash respectively.

CAT II: Enter amount of lost motion in the BACKLASH COMP touch field on the SYSTEM SETUP/X, Y or Z AXIS PARAMETERS screens for X, Y or Z backlash respectively.

Repeat the above steps to insure backlash is compensated for, adjust as necessary.
